Decisions and iterations

Rebuild the trunk latch gear

The trunk suddenly stopped staying shut. I opened the latch actuator and found failed plastic gear posts. I sourced a spare part from a junkyard, then reinforced the replacement gear to address the same weak point: screws replaced the plastic posts, and I formed JB Weld around them to reproduce the original working profile. After reassembly, the trunk latched again and has remained reliable in my use.

Repair gear-selector position sensing

The C32 became stuck in limp mode when gear-position sensing failed. I removed and disassembled the selector to access its circuit board and slotted optical sensors. My repair addressed both the board and its mechanical interface: oven heating of the removed PCB to reflow solder, plus sanding the plastic that could contact the optical sensors. The repair restored selector operation.

Trace the C32 audio path

D2B fiber-optic diagnosis preceded amplifier and subwoofer integration. An RCA-to-optical conversion bridged aftermarket signal equipment to the factory path.

Integrate C32 cabin electronics

CarPlay hardware and audio power components were packaged around the original vehicle architecture.

Work across customer vehicles

Independent Audio Services built and tuned 15+ vehicle audio/electronic systems with DSPs, amplifiers, speakers, and custom harnesses while retaining factory functions. DMM, oscilloscope, and grounding checks were used for noise and interface faults.

Two customer-vehicle examples: an SUV cargo-area installation and a pickup rear-seat installation. These are separate from both personal Mercedes projects.

Customer pickup, August 2022: protected subwoofer enclosure fitted beneath the rear seat

Results and context

The latch has remained reliable in use. The selector repair combined board heating with a clearance change, so I cannot separate their effects. The customer-installation examples below document a separate body of work.

Technical details

C32 signal path and interfaces

The C32 work connected aftermarket audio to its factory D2B fiber-optic path, then integrated the amplifier, subwoofer, CarPlay radio, and power wiring.

Independent installation scope

From August 2019 to September 2023, Independent Audio Services covered 15+ customer vehicle systems, including power protection, DSP tuning, harness work, and factory interfaces.

Latch gear: reinforcement and reassembly

Screws replace the failed molded posts, and JB Weld restores the gear profile around them. The second photograph shows the repaired gear back inside the actuator.

Selector repair: mechanical and electrical interfaces

The moving plastic passes through the optical-sensor slots. I opened the assembly to work on the board and remove the plastic contact that was interfering with those sensors.
